Domain thinking experience and insights

Or just, Tips !

After some time, or months, you will know more and see things, you need your logic and analogical abilities to see domain names from more perspectives.

Not only domain names, also the markets, products, html and css tricks (if you do that), color studying (for you who use Adsense. By the way, most articles say that the 300 x 250 or that one a little bigger perform best (up to the left) and after that the 600 x 120 skyscaper (on the right side, since reading is from left to right).
In regards of adsens etc, you will probably come to the fact that it can be a lot better to have a www.FashionBlaBlaa.net instead of a www.FashionBlaaaBlaaaa.com because the last is too long, and people won´t remember it or they would be too lazy to type in the name again. You bet! People are lazy. I guess it is one reason that short domains make a shorter way to getting increased traffic. Put bookmark scripts on your pages. Put in links to the search engines, myspace and you tube. People might bookmark the site also because they find the combination of links useful. And if they come back, they will read your content if you work on it. If you add new links. Then they may give the url to others. Put in some funny pictures, be sure they will show their friends. You can change the one or more site colors after some time while saving the original css to switch back later on.

Oh and some more, you will realiez that hyphenated domains are found better by search engines. When search engines read a text, they don´t read ordinary names.
A "laptoppc"-domain will be read as laptoppc. There is no such word. A hyphenasted domain as "laptop-pc" will be read as laptop pc. When people search for laptop pc
the results may include pages where the hyphenated url is. If they click on the cached result it´ll show the link in color.

As times goes by. You read about others tips and you find your own. Still the first thing is to make content. Write, write and write. With made content you may go on to fine tune your sites later on.

But just don´t copy. And preferably, don´t tell your friends about your sites, you don´t want 300 clicks from the same ip, who thought he would "help" you.

The domain industry

Later, I realized that people search for certain things but not all. A phrase can be very existing in search results but few or very few people looking for it.
So called domain resellers look for domain names that correlate to common search words/phrases or words/phrases that just sound so good that the potential is obvious.
Other specialized names can be valuable only to end users.
End users are companies, manufacturers or distributors etc. They may sell certain items but in a niche where they have their customers. For those, any domain name describing or naming their products or services can be as valuable as how much they would consider to pay, to get hold of that name. Otherwise someone else or a competitor would get it.

So finding domains today that are free today requires some skill. Because there are a lot of available domains. Even .coms. Of course most are gone but if you look in a broad way, you still find that some or a few percent are available. And when I have seen them, I have usually taken them, at least those who seemes to be best. But I have lists with untaken domain and they disturb me a bit. I see the potential but for all there is, I cannot reg all of them. No, and you have to choose those you view as best.

When looking back, I have often found that I have changed, like how could I reg that one I should have taken that one instead and so on. Probably that thing can´t be avoided but sometimes you may even switch back to the first point anyway!

Nevertheless, since so many -coms are taken, them what to do? Being very creative can sometimes output smart names that are available but then when these are taken too.. well you may have to give up.

More and more, other (country) tld-s have become more popular since you can still find a lot of single words available and with the probability in mind that they will be more valuable in time, it can be a good investment.
However I do believe right now, that the extension that will gain most is the old .net. Net is since a long time and today, the second most popular extension.
All the single words are taken as .nets (and as .org, .info too.) though you sometimes find some single words in plural form that are .net available.
More and more, phrases already taken as .com are being taken as net.

Pro Domainer

Hello, and thanks for looking in!

Who am i, who writes here? Well, someone who has got a bunch of domains and yes some of them quite good yes. I can say, so far, I have only hand regged the domains I have. I have done so much reserach since I began, so much studying so I think the domain names I have found are somewhat better than average. Then, I have come to a pint where I realize I have to focus more which is not easy! Focusing means using the time available in the best possible way.
Like many others, in the beginning, I regged too many domain names that just won´t perform. But some of them were good though I was new to it. How did I do in the beginning. I think I had two strategies, one by one or combined. First, if an available domain name sounded very good, and good in a good way, then I thought so it´s available then I take it. The other way was to to a search on google (or yahoo too) to see how many results that were given for the phrase or word. Some gave results up to a million so I just thought it can´t be wrong, combined with a whole sense for the phrase.

Lets go to the next chapter about the domain industry.
